The case

We act for three cross-party MPs in a challenge to the Charity Commission relating to its failure to take action against Global Warming Policy Foundation, a purportedly educational charity with a strong climate denialist agenda. We made a request to the Charity Commission to investigate the charitable status of Global Warming Policy Foundation (‘GWPF’), which in our clients’ view is:

a) a vehicle to lobby against policies addressing climate change, and as such not properly an educational charity, and

b) subject to various management issues, including trustee conflicts of interests, which amount to breaches of the Charities Act.

In a detailed letter, we set out the bases on which GWPF could be said to be in breach of the Charities Act 2011. The Charity Commission has confirmed it is considering our evidence.

It was later reported that GWPF had filed a serious incident report with the Commission in relation to the matters raised in our letter. We are continuing to push the Commission to act, and wrote to the Commission on our clients’ behalf raising two new matters of concern.
